Lewis recalls conversations with the late Gouverneur Morris at Ticonderoga and in Albany regarding the possibility of a waterway connecting the Hudson River with the Great Lakes. He recalls a meeting of himself, Morris, Clinton, and two others where the idea was formulated by Morris. It was under Governor Clinton that the Erie Canal was built.
